West Lake Project
2025 - Ongoing
This project explores the history and current state of the Buddhist grotto sculptures around West Lake, as well as how the unseen can be perceived, through a playful archaeology and a wander through the mountains and woods.
MANIFESTATION
The work presents an artistic process of archaeological investigation.
These traditional sculptures were damaged and destroyed through historical transformations, those visible today have largely undergone repair, restoration, and reconstruction, while some survive only through labels stating that a particular sculpture once existed here. Once objects of worship and devotion, these sculptures have now become objects of academic interpretation. A "second hand sacredness" recoded through modernity, comes to fill the void left by the "first-hand sacredness" erased by intervention of historical forces.
