Superstition (Temp)
The colour photographs focus on traces of contemporary folk beliefs that the artist observed still existing in the mountains surrounding West Lake. Neither formally documented and nor widely publicised, these beliefs continue through a form of social tacit acceptance. The artist captures these presences, which have neither fixed forms nor specific names, and gives them a visual Aura. Here, photography as a means of image production, participates in the reproduction of sacredness - through transplantation, representation, and suggestion, it transforms the unseen into something seen and intelligible, considering how sacredness is reproduced through modern mechanisms of knowledge and visuality.
